A pool pump does not move a fixed amount of water. It moves whatever your plumbing, filter and equipment allow at the speed it is running. Which is why the number on the box tells you almost nothing useful.

Pool pump installation is matching a pump to the hydraulic system it has to work in — your plumbing, your filter's flow limit and every piece of equipment with a minimum flow requirement — then plumbing it so it can be serviced, wiring it to code, and programming the operating points the pool actually needs. Pool volume is where sizing starts, not where it ends.

Flow falls with speed. Head falls with speed squared. Power falls with speed cubed. That last one is why variable speed matters — and the chart shows the part that explains why nobody can quote your flow rate over the phone.

Relative shapes, not your pool's numbers. The point is the behaviour: lowering the speed drops the pump curve, and the operating point slides down the system curve — which is a fixed property of your plumbing, not of the pump.

What the theory predicts, and what DOE actually measured

Drop from 3,450 rpm to 2,400 rpm — a 30% speed reduction — and the cube law predicts power falling to about 34% of what it was.

DOE's published pool-pump example reports the draw going from 2,000 watts to 593 watts. That is a 70% reduction in power, landing close to but not exactly on the cube-law prediction.

Which is the point. The affinity laws are a good mental model and a bad calculator. Real systems have static head, real efficiency shifts with operating point, and the only number that means anything for your pool comes from your pool.

Why "half speed uses one-eighth the energy" is not quite the truth

The cube law is about instantaneous power — the kilowatts the motor is drawing at that moment. Your bill is in kilowatt-hours, which is power multiplied by time.

Run the pump slower and it moves less water per minute, so it has to run longer to move the same water. DOE says this plainly: lowering pool pump speed forces longer runtime. The energy saving over a full day is therefore real and often large — but it is not the raw cube-law figure.

Both Pentair and ENERGY STAR publish the simplified version on their own pages. It is a useful illustration of why slow running is powerful. It is not a calculation of your bill.

What is well supported: DOE puts variable-speed pool pump energy reduction in the range of 50% to 90%, and ENERGY STAR reports its certified in-ground pumps using about 20% less energy than standard pumps.

Pump Curve, System Curve

Why nobody can tell you your flow rate over the phone

A pump does not "produce 80 gallons a minute". It produces whatever the resistance in front of it allows.

The pump curve
What the pump can do. It starts high at zero flow and falls as flow increases — a pump pushing against a closed valve makes maximum pressure and moves nothing. Manufacturers publish a family of these, one per speed.
The system curve
What your plumbing demands. It starts at the static head and rises as flow increases, because friction grows with flow. This is a property of your pipes, fittings, filter and equipment — not of the pump.
The operating point
Where the two cross. That intersection is your actual flow rate. Change the pump speed and you slide along the system curve; change the plumbing or load the filter and the system curve itself moves.
Total dynamic head
The total resistance the pump has to overcome — static lift plus friction losses plus everything else in the path. It is what the y-axis of both curves is measuring.

How It Actually Works

The motor and the pump are not the same thing

People use the words interchangeably and then get quoted for the wrong job. The motor is the dry half that spins. The wet end — basket, impeller, volute, seal — is where the water actually gets moved, and the two fail independently.

That distinction is worth understanding before anyone quotes you, because a failed seal and a failed motor are very different bills, and one of them is often solved without touching the other.

The Expensive Misconception

More horsepower is not a water-quality strategy

Four things people believe about pump size, and what is actually true.

  • More horsepower means cleaner water

    It does not. Filtration works by water passing through media slowly enough to be caught. Push more water than the filter is rated for and you filter worse, not faster.

  • A bigger pump fixes weak returns

    Only if the pump was the restriction. If the plumbing, a loaded filter or a blocked basket is the limit, a bigger pump strains against the same restriction and moves little more water for a lot more power.

  • Horsepower tells you the flow

    It does not. A pump does not simply "produce 80 gallons a minute" — it produces whatever the resistance of your system allows at the speed it is running. That is what a pump curve is for.

  • A high-horsepower variable-speed pump is oversized

    This one is the subtle case, and worth getting right. A variable-speed pump with a high maximum rating spends most of its life at a fraction of that speed. Its maximum is a capability for the jobs that need flow, not a description of how it runs. Judge the operating points, not the badge.

One Speed For Everything Never Made Sense

Your pool does several jobs. They need different flow.

This is the actual argument for variable speed — not the energy saving, which is a consequence. A single-speed pump has to run every job at the speed the hardest job needs.

  • Filtration

    Low

    The bulk of the day's work. Slow is better here — water spends longer in the filter, and the energy cost falls steeply.

  • Skimming

    Moderate

    Skimmers need enough flow to pull a proper surface pull. One published figure puts most skimmers at around 25 gallons per minute for adequate performance.

  • Pool cleaner

    Moderate to high

    Suction and pressure cleaners have their own flow requirement, which is why they usually get their own window in the schedule.

  • Heating

    Manufacturer-specified

    Heaters and heat pumps have defined minimum and maximum flow rates. The pump schedule has to respect them, and the numbers come from that unit's manual — not from us.

  • Salt chlorine generation

    Manufacturer-specified

    A salt cell only makes chlorine while water is moving through it, so sanitiser production and pump schedule are the same decision.

  • Spa jets and water features

    High

    The short, high-flow jobs. This is exactly what a variable-speed pump's upper range exists for.

"Single-speed pool pumps are illegal now."

That is not what the rules say, and the difference matters if you are deciding what to do about the pump you already own.

    The pump rule is about efficiency, not speed

    Federal standards for dedicated-purpose pool pumps sit at 10 CFR 431.465(f) and set a minimum Weighted Energy Factor. They are a performance standard. Nothing in them requires a pump to be single-, two- or variable-speed.

    The motor rule is the one that mandates variable speed

    A separate standard, 10 CFR 431.485(c), requires dedicated-purpose pool pump motors of 0.5 THP and above to be variable speed control motors. For standard-size motors (1.15 to 5 THP) that took effect on 29 September 2025. For small-size motors (0.5 up to 1.15 THP) the date is 28 September 2027 — still ahead of us.

    It applies at manufacture, not to your back yard

    These standards are triggered by when equipment is manufactured or imported. Nothing requires you to remove a working single-speed pump, and nobody can tell you that you are out of compliance for running one.

    Where it does reach you is replacement

    The motor standard applies however the motor is sold, including as a standalone replacement. DOE also stated there are no design characteristics that would stop variable-speed motors being drop-in replacements for single-speed ones — so a motor swap is generally still a motor swap.

On WEF: WEF — Weighted Energy Factor — measures pump efficiency across operating points weighted to reflect real-world use. It is why two pumps with the same horsepower on the box can be genuinely different pumps, and why horsepower alone is a poor way to shop.

On rebates: On rebates: as of August 2026 SRP's own FAQ says its pool pump rebate "is no longer available," and APS lists none. Figures still circulating online trace to a fact sheet that expired in 2025. If that changes we will say so — we are not going to quote you a rebate that does not exist.

Runtime

How long should I run my pump in Arizona?

There is no single correct number, and the widely repeated "eight hours a day" is not a rule that applies to your pool. That figure comes from public and semipublic pool code — in Maricopa County it is an equipment SIZING requirement — and that code states plainly that it does not apply to a private residential swimming pool.

What actually decides it is speed and time together. A variable-speed pump running long and slow can move the same water for a fraction of the power a single-speed pump uses in a short, hard burst.

Hayward's own owner's manual puts it this way: filter all the water in the pool at least once every 24 hours, and running at a lower speed may require running longer to meet that. It also notes that low-speed running improves filtration, because the filter has more time to work.

On top of that baseline sit the jobs with their own requirements — the heater, the salt cell, the cleaner, the features — each of which needs its own window at its own speed.

What Arizona adds

Arizona adds load rather than changing the principle: a long season, 95°F-plus water raising sanitiser demand, and monsoon debris arriving in volume between 15 June and 30 September. Summer schedules here are genuinely longer than the national advice assumes.

Which is why we will not print an RPM or an hour count on a web page. Yours depends on your plumbing, your filter, and every piece of equipment with a minimum flow requirement.

Before You Buy A Pump

What your pump is telling you

Six things pumps do when something is wrong. Most of them are a repair, and one of them means switch it off now.

  • It is loud, screeching or grinding

    Noise is a diagnosis job rather than a replacement decision. A rising screech usually points at bearings; a rattling growl can be debris or cavitation; a hum with no rotation is electrical. Those have very different answers and only one of them is a new pump.

    • Worn bearings
    • Cavitation — the pump starving for water
    • Debris in the impeller
    • Loose mounting transmitting vibration

  • It will not hold prime

    Air is getting into the suction side, or water is not reaching the pump. Persistent air under the lid is a real signal — occasional bubbles at start-up are not. This is almost always a repair rather than a replacement.

    Usual causes

    • Perished lid o-ring
    • A leaking union or valve before the pump
    • Low water level
    • Blocked skimmer or pump basket
    • A restriction in the suction line

  • It sounds like it is full of gravel

    That rattling is the classic description of cavitation — the pump trying to pull more water than the suction side can deliver, so vapour bubbles form and collapse. The pump is not too weak. It is starving, and running it that way damages it.

    Usual causes

    • A closed or partly closed valve
    • A blocked basket
    • An undersized or blocked suction line
    • Low water level
    • Air being drawn in

  • It keeps shutting itself off

    Usually a motor getting too hot and tripping its own thermal overload. Running it repeatedly through that cycle is what turns a fixable problem into a failed motor.

    Usual causes

    • Restricted flow making the motor work harder
    • An equipment pad in full sun with no ventilation
    • A failing capacitor
    • An electrical supply problem

  • The returns are weak

    Weak flow is a system symptom, not a pump verdict. Whether the filter gauge reads high or low tells you which side of the pump the restriction is on — high means after, low means before.

    • Loaded filter

    • A pump no longer moving what it should
    • A plumbing restriction

  • It is leaking

    Where it leaks from decides how big the job is. A shaft seal drip is routine and repairable. Water running onto the motor is the version that turns a seal into a motor replacement, which is why it is worth acting on early.

    • A leaking union
    • A cracked housing

Four Different Answers

Repair it, re-motor it, replace it — or rethink it

Plenty of pumps get replaced when a seal was the problem, and plenty of motors get replaced into a system that was never right.

  • Repair the wet end

    Seals, o-rings, the lid, the basket, the impeller. The motor is healthy and the pump is correctly sized for the system.

  • Replace the motor only

    The wet end is sound and the motor has failed. Worth knowing that the federal motor standard now applies to standalone replacement motors too, which can change what is available for an older pump — DOE stated variable-speed motors are generally drop-in replacements for single-speed ones.

  • Replace the pump

    A cracked housing, an obsolete unit with no parts, repeated failures, or a pump that was never right for the system it is on.

  • Rethink the system

    The pump is one of several things due. If the filter, the plumbing and the pad are all at the end of their life, replacing the pump alone tends to expose the next weakest link.

Programming and verification are the difference between a pump that is installed and a pump that is working.

    Audit the system

    Existing pump, plumbing, filter, pool volume and everything with a flow requirement — before anything is specified.

    Work out what the system needs

    Not the pool volume alone. The jobs the pool has to do, and the resistance the plumbing puts in the way.

    Check filter compatibility

    The filter has a design flow limit. A pump that overruns it filters worse, not better.

  4. 04

    Select the pump

    Chosen on operating points and efficiency, not on the horsepower printed on the box.

    Remove the old unit

    Out cleanly, with the existing plumbing assessed rather than assumed.

    Plumb for service

    Unions where they belong, so the next person does not need a saw. It will not make future work free — it makes it possible.

    Pool equipment is bonded, wired and protected to code. This is licensed work and not a place for improvisation.

Choosing

What size pool pump do I need?

Pool volume is the starting point and nowhere near the whole answer. The pump has to suit the resistance of your plumbing, the flow limit of your filter, and the minimum flow every other piece of equipment needs — heater, salt cell, cleaner, features. Two identical-volume pools with different plumbing genuinely need different pumps, which is why sizing from gallons alone produces so many badly matched systems.

Is a bigger pool pump better?

No, and it is one of the more expensive misconceptions in pool ownership. Filtration depends on water passing through the media slowly enough to be caught, so pushing more water than the filter is rated for filters worse rather than faster. Oversizing also raises energy use, pressure and noise. There is even a hard safety ceiling: flow at full speed cannot exceed the rate marked on the suction outlet fitting.

What is WEF on a pool pump?

Weighted Energy Factor — a measure of pump efficiency across operating points, weighted to reflect real-world use. It is the number federal standards are written against, and it is far more informative than horsepower, because two pumps with the same horsepower on the box can have quite different WEF ratings and therefore quite different running costs.

Is a high-horsepower variable-speed pump oversized?

Not necessarily, and this is worth getting right. A variable-speed pump spends most of its life running far below its maximum — the top of its range exists for the short jobs that genuinely need flow, like spa jets or a cleaner. What matters is the operating points it will actually run at on your system, not the biggest number it is capable of.

Are single-speed pool pumps illegal?

No — and the version of this you will read elsewhere is usually wrong. The federal pump standard, 10 CFR 431.465(f), is an efficiency standard based on Weighted Energy Factor; it contains no requirement about speed at all. What is generally true is that most of the day should be low-speed filtration, with short higher-speed windows for the jobs that need flow. The actual numbers get set on your equipment, at your pool.

Continuous low-speed running is a normal way to operate one, and it has genuine advantages — steadier chemistry distribution and better filtration, because the filter has more time to work. Whether it makes sense for your pool depends on the speed, your equipment's flow requirements and what you are paying for electricity. It is a scheduling decision rather than a rule.

Do heaters and salt systems change the schedule?

Yes, and they are the most common reason a schedule that looks efficient on paper does not work. Heaters and heat pumps have manufacturer-defined minimum and maximum flow rates, and a salt cell only produces chlorine while water is moving through it. Those requirements come from each unit's own documentation, which is exactly why we program to your equipment rather than to a default.

Repair or replace

Can I just replace the motor instead of the whole pump?

Often yes, when the wet end is healthy and correctly sized — it is usually the cheaper and more sensible route. One thing to know: the federal motor standard applies to motors sold as standalone replacements too, so what is available for an older pump has changed. DOE stated there are no design characteristics that would prevent variable-speed motors being drop-in replacements for single-speed ones, so the swap itself is generally still straightforward.

Why is my pool pump making noise?

Different noises mean different things, and this is genuinely worth diagnosing rather than guessing. A rising screech usually points at bearings. A rattle like gravel is the classic description of cavitation — the pump starving for water, which is a suction-side problem rather than a weak pump. A hum with no rotation is electrical, often a capacitor. Only one of those is a new pump, and running a cavitating pump damages it.

Should I replace the filter at the same time as the pump?

Worth considering, because the two work as a system. A more capable pump pushing more water through an already-marginal filter tends to expose the filter's limits straight away. It is not automatic though — if the existing filter is healthy and its flow limit suits the new pump, there is no reason to replace it.

How long do pool pumps last in Arizona?

We are not going to give you a number, because the honest range is wide and depends on things that vary hugely between pools — how many hours it runs, whether the pad gets afternoon sun, whether the water it moves is balanced, and whether it has spent years fighting a restriction. What we can say is that heat and long runtimes are hard on motors here, and that most pumps give warning before they fail if someone is paying attention.

Can a new pump work with my existing filter and plumbing?

Usually, and checking is part of the job rather than an optional extra. What matters is whether the filter's flow limit suits the pump's operating points and whether the plumbing can carry the flow without excessive friction. Occasionally the answer is that the plumbing is the real constraint — in which case a bigger pump would have been money spent fighting a pipe.

Does pool pump installation involve electrical work?

Yes, and it is not a DIY area. Pool equipment has specific requirements for bonding, wiring and protection, and variable-speed pumps often have different electrical requirements from the single-speed unit they replace. It is licensed work for good reason — this is high voltage next to water.

What does pool pump installation cost?

We do not publish a figure, because it depends on things we would be guessing at: the pump itself, what your system actually demands, whether the plumbing needs changes, the electrical situation at the pad, and whether automation is involved.
