My pump won't hold prime

There's air in the pump basket

My pool is losing water
Keep an eye on itIn an Arizona summer, evaporation is the most likely answer and is entirely normal. A genuine leak usually shows itself at the equipment pad before anywhere else.

- Evaporation — heat, low humidity and wind all accelerate it here
- Splash-out and backwashing being under-counted
- A drip at a union, valve or the pump seal

My equipment keeps shutting itself off
Turn it offRepeated shut-offs are usually a motor overheating and tripping its own thermal cutout. It is the motor telling you it is close to done.

- Poor ventilation or a sun-baked equipment pad
- A failing capacitor making the motor work harder
- Restricted flow forcing the motor to labour

Can I keep running the pool?
No. Each thermal trip and restart is another hard cycle on a motor that is already struggling.

My pump is dripping water

Can I keep running the pool?
If nothing is obviously leaking onto electrics and the pump is not screeching or dry, it can usually keep running until someone looks.

Every pool runs the same loop. Knowing which stage you are looking at is most of diagnosing it — and it explains why the symptom and the cause are so often at opposite ends.

The Repairs We Actually Do
Where pool repairs really land
Most pool repair is pump repair, and most of the rest is water going where it shouldn't.
Pump & motor repair
The pump moves every gallon through everything else, so when it struggles the whole pool follows. Five parts account for nearly all of it — and four of the five are a repair, not a replacement, if they are caught early.
- Shaft seal— The most common pump leak. Drips onto the motor, which is what turns it into a bigger job.
- Bearings— The rising screech. Cheap while it is still noise.
- Impeller— Debris or wear — shows up as weak flow rather than sound.
- Capacitor— The hum with no rotation. Often the whole fix.
- Lid & o-ring— Perished seals draw air in, which is where prime loss starts.


Filter & pressure problems
Read the gauge against the pressure it showed when the filter was last clean. Both Pentair and Hayward point to the same threshold: about 10 psi over that baseline means clean it. Everything else the gauge tells you is a variation on that.

- A restriction before it. Blocked baskets, air being drawn in, low water, or a clogged impeller.

The fear is being sold a new pump for a failed o-ring. Age alone decides nothing — these five things do, and a real diagnosis is what settles them.

Arizona is hard on pool equipment
Equipment here does not fail the way it does elsewhere. Six conditions shorten its life, and they explain most of what we get called out to.
Pad heat
Equipment sits in full sun on concrete through 110°F afternoons. Motors run hotter, and a motor that is already struggling trips its thermal cutout sooner.
Hard water & scale
Mesa water is classed as very hard, around 12–13 grains per gallon. Scale builds inside plumbing, on heat-exchange surfaces and on salt cells, quietly restricting flow.
Monsoon dust
Arizona’s monsoon runs June 15 to September 30. A single dust storm can load a filter enough to send pressure past its clean baseline in one afternoon.
Long filtration season
There is no winter shutdown here. Pumps run more hours per year than in most of the country, so wear arrives sooner in calendar terms.
UV on everything
Around 330 sunny days a year degrades exposed PVC, o-rings and pump lids. Brittle plastic at the pad is an Arizona failure mode.
Evaporation
Relentless evaporation drops water levels fast. A skimmer left gulping air is one of the most common causes of a pump losing prime here.

Why is my pool pump making a loud noise?
A rising screech or grinding is most often motor bearings wearing out. The other common cause is cavitation — the pump straining because it is not getting enough water, usually from a blocked basket, a low water level or air being drawn in on the suction side. Noise is the earliest and cheapest warning you get: a bearing caught early is a repair, ignored it takes the motor with it.
Why won’t my pool pump prime?
Almost always air getting in on the suction side — a perished lid o-ring, a lid not seated, loose drain plugs, or a union that has worked loose. It can also be a water level below the skimmer mouth, or a blocked skimmer or pump basket. This is the one symptom where turning the pump off until someone looks genuinely saves money, because a pump running dry destroys the seal and then the housing.
Is my pool losing water, or is it just evaporation?
In an Arizona summer the two look identical, and evaporation is the more common answer. What separates them is where the loss is happening and whether anything at the equipment pad is wet. We start at the pad, because that is where the findable leaks usually are, before assuming anything about the shell or the plumbing.
Should I repair or replace my pool pump?
It depends on what actually failed, not on the pump’s age. A seal, o-ring, lid, basket or capacitor is normally worth repairing. A failed motor, a cracked housing, a unit already rebuilt once, or one where parts have become hard to source usually is not. We tell you which one you are looking at — including when a repair only buys you a few months.
What does the filter pressure gauge tell me?
It is the best early-warning instrument on the pad. Read against the pressure when the filter was last clean, a rise of roughly 10 psi is the manufacturer signal (both Pentair and Hayward say so) that it needs cleaning. Pressure that stays high after a clean, or keeps climbing quickly, is pointing at something else.
Do you repair pool heaters, lights or automation?
No. We handle pumps and motors, leaks, valves and plumbing, filter systems, circulation problems and equipment installation. Heaters, pool lights, automation and electrical work sit outside what we take on — we would rather say so up front than find out halfway through a job that it is not our trade.
Do you diagnose before quoting a replacement?
Always. The point of a diagnosis is to find out whether you need a part or a pump, and those are very different numbers. You get told what failed and what it will cost before any work starts, and if something unexpected turns up, you decide.
Can a repair wait, or should I switch the pump off?
Two symptoms are worth acting on immediately: a pump that will not hold prime, and one that keeps shutting itself off. Both mean the equipment is damaging itself by continuing to run. Noise, a slow drip or climbing pressure are worth booking soon but are not usually an emergency.
