The Numbers We Hold

The chemistry maintenance keeps in range

These are the standards-body targets a professional balances toward — and what makes each one harder in the desert.

  • Free chlorine

    1–3 ppm

    The active sanitiser doing the actual disinfecting.

    The CDC floor rises to 2 ppm once stabiliser is in the water — and Arizona sun burns chlorine off fast, so it needs watching, not guessing.

  • pH

    7.4–7.6

    How acidic or basic the water is — it decides how well chlorine actually works.

    Above 8.0 chlorine barely disinfects; below 7.0 it corrodes surfaces and stings eyes. Evaporation and hard fill water tend to push pH up here.

  • Total alkalinity

    80–120 ppm

    The buffer that keeps pH from swinging every time something changes.

    Get this right first and pH stops fighting you. Acceptable band runs 60–180 ppm.

  • Calcium hardness

    200–400 ppm

    Too low dissolves plaster and grout; too high scales tile and equipment.

    Mesa's very hard tap water (~12–13 grains/gal) pushes calcium toward the top of the range — it is exactly what leaves the white line on your tile.

  • Cyanuric acid (stabiliser)

    30–50 ppm

    Sunscreen for your chlorine — it shields sanitiser from UV so it lasts.

    Essential in the desert. But it never evaporates, so it slowly concentrates; past ~100 ppm it "locks" chlorine and the fix is replacing water, not adding chemicals.

  • Salt (saltwater pools)

    2,700–3,400 ppm

    The level a salt cell needs to generate its own chlorine (≈3,200 ppm is the sweet spot).

    Hard water scales the cell and 95°F+ water strains the generator, so salt cells are a wear item in Arizona.

  • Total dissolved solids

    within ~1,500 ppm of start

    Everything dissolved in the water added together — it dulls sanitiser and clarity as it climbs.

    Relentless evaporation concentrates TDS here, which is the main reason desert pools get drained and refilled every few years.

Target ranges per CDC Healthy Swimming and PHTA / ANSI-APSP-11. A one-time correction rather than ongoing care is chemical balancing.

Why Arizona Is Harder

The desert is why consistency matters here

Five measured conditions make East Valley pools drift faster than pools almost anywhere else.

  • Monsoon dust and haboobs

    Arizona's monsoon runs June 15 to September 30, with dust storms peaking mid-July through August. A single haboob can load a pool with fine dust in minutes, which is why summer cleans matter most.

  • Very hard water builds scale

    Mesa tap water is classed as very hard — around 12–13 grains per gallon, well above the US average. That mineral load is what leaves the calcium line on your tile, so brushing the waterline every visit matters here.

  • Extreme UV burns off chlorine

    The Phoenix area sees around 330 sunny days a year and summer UV in the "extreme" range. Ultraviolet degrades unstabilised chlorine, so sanitiser is consumed faster here than almost anywhere — and a pool falls behind quickly without regular attention.

    Warm water plus depleted chlorine is exactly the condition algae needs. In an Arizona summer that window is short, which is why a consistent clean beats catching up after the water has already turned.

Where pool water is allowed to go in Mesa

Draining comes up eventually for every desert pool. Mesa has specific rules about where that water may go — worth knowing before anyone opens a valve.

No permit is needed to drain onto your own property. Because the rules are specific and the timing matters in the heat, most homeowners have it handled rather than guessing.

    Seals, bearings and prime are the things that go first. New noise, repeated prime loss or a damp pad are the early warnings maintenance is there to catch.

Worth Correcting

Four things people are told that aren't quite right

  • “More chlorine is always better.”

    Past the useful range you get irritation and faster surface wear, not better water. And if stabiliser has climbed too high, adding chlorine barely helps — the CYA is holding it back.

  • “A robot cleaner means I don’t need brushing.”

    Robots miss corners, steps, tanning ledges and behind ladders, and light scrubbing leaves established biofilm behind. Brushing is still what shears it off.

  • “Saltwater pools are chlorine-free.”

    A salt system makes its own chlorine from the salt — the water is still chlorinated. It also still needs weekly testing, and Arizona is hard on the cell.

  • “You can set it and forget it in winter.”

    Arizona pools stay open. Cooler water is more forgiving and demand drops, but chemistry still drifts and equipment still needs watching.

What is the difference between pool cleaning and pool maintenance?

A weekly service visit does both — the difference matters when you are deciding what you actually need.

How often does an Arizona pool need maintenance?

Weekly for most Mesa pools. Extreme UV burns off chlorine faster than almost anywhere, summer water temperatures let algae establish within days, and monsoon dust storms load the water fast. A seven-day rhythm is the practical baseline here — the point of maintenance is that nothing gets a chance to drift.

Does regular maintenance actually save money?

It prevents the expensive version of the same problem. Stabiliser that is allowed to concentrate eventually needs a drain and refill rather than a chemical. What gets tested during a maintenance visit?

Free chlorine, pH and total alkalinity every visit, because those move the fastest and control clarity and comfort. Calcium hardness and cyanuric acid (stabiliser) are checked as the water drifts — both concentrate slowly in a desert pool, and both change what the other readings mean.

Do you handle repairs too, or only maintenance?

Both, in house. That is deliberate: the person who knows your pool week to week is the same one diagnosing it when the pump starts making a noise, so you are not waiting on a subcontractor. If something needs repair we tell you what failed and what it will cost before starting.

Do I need to be home for maintenance visits?

No, as long as we have gate access and any pets are secured. Most homeowners are at work during their service window. If anything needs your attention we let you know rather than proceeding on our own judgement.

How do I know the work was actually done?

You hear from us about what the water was doing and anything we found — that is the part most people say was missing from their last company. Ask us exactly how we communicate results when you get your estimate, so you know what to expect before you commit.

Is a saltwater pool less maintenance?

Less hands-on dosing, not less maintenance. The salt cell generates chlorine automatically so levels stay steadier, but the water still needs weekly testing, and Arizona is hard on the equipment: hard water scales the cell and high summer water temperatures strain the generator, so cells are a periodic replacement item.

Can I do my own pool maintenance?

Absolutely, and for a newer pool with a light debris load it is very reasonable. It costs a few hours a week through summer, and the parts people most often get caught out by are testing accuracy and spotting equipment trends early. If you travel, or you have heavy dust and tree load, scheduled care usually wins on time rather than on skill.

How often should the filter be cleaned?

By pressure, not by calendar. Both Pentair and Hayward point to cleaning or backwashing when the gauge reads about 10 psi above the filter’s clean starting pressure. Arizona dust reaches that point faster, so filters generally need attention more often through monsoon season.

Why does my pool need draining every few years?

Water evaporates here relentlessly, but the things dissolved in it do not. Stabiliser and total dissolved solids concentrate over time until chemistry stops responding the way it should — at that point replacing some or all of the water is cheaper and more effective than chasing it with chemicals. Go by the test results rather than a calendar.

Where am I allowed to drain pool water in Mesa?

The City of Mesa allows pool water to be drained onto your own property, where it stays on your property, or into the home’s sanitary sewer cleanout — water only, no solids or sediment. It must never go into the street, the gutter or a storm drain, or run onto a neighbour’s property. No permit is required to drain onto your own property.

Does a robotic cleaner mean I don’t need pool service?

A robot automates the floor and walls, which is genuinely useful — but it does not test or balance chemistry, clean or backwash the filter, or notice that your pump has started making a new noise. It replaces part of the cleaning, not the maintenance.

Should the pump run longer in summer?

Yes. Circulation is what keeps sanitiser distributed and algae from settling, and both demand and water temperature climb through an Arizona summer — so pumps typically run appreciably longer in July than in January. Getting that runtime right is part of what maintenance is watching.
